New to Bitcoin? Confused? Need help? You've come to the right place.

Bitcoin is an internet based decentralised currency. Similarly to Bittorrent, but Bitcoin uses a public ledger called the blockchain to record who has sent and received money. It's very new, and for many very confusing. BitcoinHelp aims to rectify this. Whether it be explaining how it works, how to use it, how to buy Bitcoins, how to integrate Bitcoins into your business. Sharing your successes as well as failures in order to help others is also gladly received. Ask away!

Searched for the answer, couldn't find it, here I am.

I have two questions that have been on my mind for a while now and I haven't found any answers on my own so I turn to reddit.
Question 1: Is there a way to turn BTC in a wallet on blockchain.info or in the bitcoin-qt to USD?
Question 2: Is there a way to send BTC from a blockchain/bitcoin-qt wallet to a coinbase.com wallet?
Sorry for the beginner questions but hey we all got to start somewhere. Thanks!

Trying to salvage some coins from 2013. Core (bitcoin-qt.exe v0.8.1-beta on Windows 8.1) is taking weeks to DL the blockchain as expected but keeps crashing now. Can I upgrade to a newer version without losing what I've gotten already (about 75% complete)?

Currently there are 134305 blocks remaining. When I start it up it works pretty smoothly for a while but then slows down. I leave it running while I'm gone but the last several days when I've come back it has crashed and gives me an I/O error, and I have to hit OK then start it back up. It does appear to be further along when I start it back up but not by a whole lot. So this has really slowed my progress. It's reindexed about 75% though, and so I don't want to start over from the beginning.
The drive it is on has ~400gb of free space so that's not the issue. I have 8gb of memory, and the task manager says bitcoin is taking up about 500mb, but it's using 60-85% of my cpu at a time.
If I download a newer version of core, I can just copy/paste the old wallet.dat file, right? But wouldn't it have to start downloading the entire blockchain again from the beginning? If so, is there any quicker method?
While typing this, it crashed twice. It only runs for about 10 minutes.
The version I have doesn't have any settings I can change. I read that there's a db size limit you can change in later versions that could help. This one does have a "debug window" with a command line console but I don't really know what to do with it. Here is a list of available commands:

Bitcoin-qt Gold does not accept Bitcoin-qt blockchain

I am trying to setup a node with the blockchain from a Bitcoin node, but the BTG QT client starts redownloading the whole chain even when the chain is already there. It downloads the same partial files into the same directory, just refuses to accept what is already there.
Is there something i can do or do i need to sit 3 days until finished?

Bitcoin-QT should have a way to choose blockchain save location by now...

The years are ticking by and the Gigabytes are stacking up and still Bitcoin-QT has no built in feature to change the save location from c:\ to something else. Why has this problem not been addressed yet? I have spent some time trying to change the directory with little success.
This is crippling the use of Bitcoin-QT for something that should be very easy to change. My SSD is not enjoying this Gavin :(

Sent bitcoin-qt payment using the bitcoin: url link from coinbase merchant, it appears in blockchain as being sent to a different address.

The merchant is saying they did not receive the payment. I used the bitcoin uri link bitcoin:35cKQqkfd2rDLnCgcsGC7Vbg5gScunwt7R?amount=0.01184838&r=https://www.coinbase.com/5a939055dd3480052b526341 Strangely the blockchain says it was sent to 14vJVJGE58XqFcWFVmbbgsEjwA9uP2sbnj
What could be the reason for this?

bitcoin-qt ready for use within half an hour … download an up-to-date pruned blockchain

Let us discuss how safe this is :-)
This tutorial is for Linux only but people using other operating systems will understand what to do.
Download the bitcoin blockchain
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B0nH34wIYOSlSG81ZUZUZGZjVkE?usp=sharing
This will download (~20 minutes) the 2485 MB file:
bitcoin_blockchain_pruned_550MB_19aug2016.tar.gz
It contains only blocks, no wallet or log files. It has been created with -prune=550
Unpack
tar -zxvf bitcoin_blockchain_pruned_550MB_19aug2016.tar.gz
and observe it contains only blocks and chain state data. This will create the directory:
.bitcoin_pruned_550MB_19aug2016
Let’s assume you move this to ~/.bitcoin_pruned, so
mv .bitcoin_pruned_550MB_19aug2016 ~/.bitcoin_pruned
Run bitcoin-qt
When you start bitcoin-qt, a new wallet will be created: back it up first. My advice is to use bitcoin-qt 0.13.0rc3, because it creates a HD wallet that never runs out of addresses.
Start bitcoin-qt in fast start-up mode first:
bitcoin-qt –prune=550 –checklevel=2 –checkblocks=10 –checkblocksverify=10 –datadir=yourpath/.bitcoin_pruned
and let it sync quickly. Check more thoroughly next time with 10 -> 500000.
You can have a quick look at what’s happening:
tail ~/.bitcoin_pruned/debug.log.

FOR NOW, the drawback is that if you want to add addresses (watch-only or spendable) that already contain bitcoins, you have to create the pruned blockchain from scratch yourself, which takes a lot of time (or have someone with a full blockchain rescan the wallet for you). This is not really necessary: if the user is not interested in the history of his transactions, the balances can be obtained directly from the UTXO set. It has already been approved to add this feature in some future Core release:
https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+label%3AWallet, #8497.
I will automatically update the google drive with new up-to-date blockchains soon.
EDIT:
openssl dgst -sha256 bitcoin_blockchain_pruned_550MB_19aug2016.tar.gz SHA256(bitcoin_blockchain_pruned_550MB_19aug2016.tar.gz)= ce36bcb9ab691c358b27d3051f8f38452bc182ca636eae992563c60805a9d4b0

This is frustrating. This might be the 10th time I've had to try to explain this in this subreddit: Bitcoin-qt blockchain downloading is NOT network bound. It is HDD bound. Bitcoind/qt 0.8 greatly increases initial chain sync speed because it reduces the HDD bottleneck.

Swapped hard drives, now the bitcoin qt client is trying to download the blockchain to my solid state hard drive. Has anyone had this issue before?

I don't see options to look up what was already on my wallet that was on my other hard drive that I have connected. Instead it is just putting it on the new hard drive. Is there a way to have it save to the old hard drive?

Suppose the fork will go fine. Which wallet will it be the best one to use after it (or even from now, by having the full blockchain, like Bitcoin-Qt)

HELP! My bitcoins literally just disappeared when I tried to send them from my qt wallet to BTC-e... Not showing up on blockchain or in my qt wallet, they're just GONE.

So I sent 5.2BTC to this address:
http://i.imgur.com/r0AvjvB.png
1BiB11v38ENSMpGQzigtJYeM8Rjgt2vR5A
And as you can see it has NOT shown up on the blockchain. WTF Is going on?? Did I just lose 5.2BTC?
Also on a semi-related note DO NOT send coins to BTC-e. I just sent 1 BTC from coinbase (as you can see on the blockchain it is 10+ confirmations) and it has NOT shown up in my BTC-e wallet. So they are currently NOT processing deposits.
I paid a 0.003BTC transaction fee for this transaction so that should not be the issue...

Bitcoin-QT, Electrum, MultiBit, Blockchain- My Wallet, Cold-Storage? What do you recommend someone that has never owned bitcoins?

I'd appreciate some expert knowledge, as all the information I read doesn't justify one service over the other. I'd like personal tales and relatable comments. I've read the Getting Started guide multiple times. Personally leaning towards having 'cold-storage' and putting a USB drive in my sock drawer at home. Please give me serious suggestions and ideas.
